1. MS Dhoni
Undoubtedly MS Dhoni is one of the best captains of Indian cricket history. He began his career as an aggressive middle order batsmen and keeper. Later he took Indian cricket team to another level. His first promotion was as a t20I captain for the inaugural t20 world cup. With the young squad, he achieved the impossible. Later, as a test captain, he was successful in taking the Indian team to No.1 position. The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup win was yet another golden feather in his cap. With the win of ICC Champions trophy in 2013, he became the first Indian captain to win 3 major titles. Captain cool showed, what is captaincy, why he is the best to the world.
2. Sourav Ganguly
There was a time that Indian team looked like a sinking ship. "Captain" Sourav Ganguly took the team to success and showcased some memories to cricket fans. He took the captaincy role when the Indian team was struggled with match fixing controversy. No star players were available for his team, so he have to test the new bloods. Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbajan, Zaheer Khan, Nehra who were the part of 2011 world cup success was Ganguly's contributions. Under Ganguly's captaincy, Indian team experienced the taste of overseas victories. Natwest Series, 2003 World Cup final entry, ICC Champions Trophy 2002 victories were his notable achievements. 3. Kapil dev
The man who bought the World Cup to India for the first time, Kapil Dev is one of the best captains of all time. In 1983, he was the man who guided the team to World Cup success. In the final Kapil and team thrashed West Indies, who were the giants in the format. Kapil Dev was brilliant with bat and bowl when he was in the captaincy throne. In the final, Kapil himself single handedly favored the match for India. His role was exceptional in attracting the Indian youngsters to the field of cricket.
4. Virat Kohli
One of the greatest batsmen's of current era, Virat Kohli is the current Indian captain in all formats. Already appreciated by his batting skills, Kohli on the way to becoming the best captain. After Dhoni's retirement from captaincy, Kohli was awarded with the role. He was successful in continuing Dhoni's winning records. Indian team under his captaincy holds the 1st position in ODIs and Tests, 3rd in the t20I. From his limited matches, he already acquired records in each format as a captain. Consecutive 9 wins in test cricket is the latest.
5. Mohammad Azharuddin
After Kapil's world cup winning performance in 1983, no other players were able to make a back up for him. But later in 90's Mohammad Azharuddin was seen impressive in the captaincy role. He was capable to win the match single handedly like Kapil Dev. He had an impressive ODI record than Kapil Dev. Out of 174 ODI matches, 90 was favored Indian team. He taught youngsters new fielding tricks, motivated them. But later, Azharuddin caught in a match fixing case and found guilty. The most respected player in field and off field had a disaster career in the climax.
6. Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi
One of the great inspirational leader of all time in Indian cricket history. He was one of the successful captain of vintage Indian cricket. Instead of forcing the players to do well, he motivated them. Indian didn't had a good pace attack at that time. He found the solution through the spinners.India's first overseas test victory was in under his captaincy. He lost his eyes in a car accident during his career, but his strong determination helped him to play 6 more test matches. Rather than being a good captain, he was a real motivation to every following captains.
7. Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid started his ODI captaincy career in the year 2000. Later he became the full time captain of ODI. He guided India in 79 matches. Out of these, 42 ,matches favored India and 33 being a defeat. 4 matches were no result match. He made his captaincy debut in test in the year 2003. He led the Indian test team in 25 matches and won 8 matches. 6 matches lost by India under his captaincy and 11 resulted in tie. Dravid was one of the best captain for India, as he led the team from front and won several matches single handedly.
8. Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin guided Indian test cricket team in the tenure of 1996 to 2000. He was not successful in the test cricket. Out of 25 matches, only 4 tests favored the team. In 9 matches Sachin and team failed to succeed. 12 matches were resulted in a tie. He captained Indian ODI team from 1996 to 1999. Out of 73 matches Indian team was victorious in 23 under his captaincy and lost in 43. He given up his captaincy position due to some betting controversy of his team mates.
9. Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar was the Indian ODI team captain from 1981 to 1985. He captained India in 37 matches and was victorious in 14 matches. Indian team experienced 21 losses under his captaincy. Gavaskar had a decent record in his test captaincy. Out 45 matches, Indian team won in 9 matches and lost in 8. Thirty matches was resulted in a tie.
10. CK Naidu
CK Naidu was the first captain of Indian cricket team. Although he was not a successful captain, his beginning had an amazing future for Indian cricket team. He led the Indian test team during the tenure of 1932-1933. He captained Indian team for 4 matches. Out of them 3 was against the team and 1 had a tie result. All the 4 matches he played was against England.
